To me, the "official" start of summer is when Summerfest begins. I love going down to the Summerfest grounds and eating and drinking my way through the festival. Just wandering from music stage to music stage, watching all the people dancing and singing along to the bands and enjoying the view of Lake Michigan is my idea of a great way to spend a summer day!
